Travel Information
Bhutan offers a unique and highly regulated travel experience, prioritizing "high-value, low- impact" tourism. Here's a breakdown of essential information for general international tourists:

Getting into Bhutan:

By Air: Bhutan has two national airlines, Drukair and Bhutan Airlines, which operate direct flights to Paro International Airport. Flights connect to various cities, including:

  • Bangladesh: Dhaka/ Twice a week

  • India: Bagdogra, Guwahati, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Gaya/ Dalily

  • Nepal: Kathmandu/ Daily

  • Vietnam/ Twice a week

  • Singapore

  • Thailand: Bangkok/ Dalily

Important Note: Flights can be delayed due to variable weather conditions and the airport operating only during daylight hours. It's advisable to allow for lengthy connecting times for onward flights. There is no seat allocation available on Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines flights into Bhutan from any sector in economy or business class.

By Road: There are official entry points from India:

  • Phuentsholing (western Bhutan)

  • Gelephu (central Bhutan)

  • Samdrup Jongkhar (eastern Bhutan) - This is an exit-only border crossing for those journeying across Bhutan. The closest airport is Guwahati, India.

Best Time to Visit:

  • October to December: Ideal for clear, fresh air, sunny skies, and pleasant temperatures. Great for festivals and stunning views.

  • January and February: Colder, but still dry with crisp, clear skies, offering a photographer's dream with snowy backdrops. Road closures can occur.

  • March and April: Pleasant temperatures, valleys abundant with blooming flowers (especially rhododendrons in late spring). Excellent for trekking.

  • May: Heat and humidity start to increase.

  • June to September: Monsoon season, with rain covering the mountains.

  • Wildlife: For seeing black-necked cranes, visit Phobjikha Valley between late October and mid-February.

  • Festivals: Paro Tshechu is typically in early April, and Thimphu Tshechu is popular in September/October. Book well in advance if you plan to attend.
